White Lotus Aromatics Newsletter Issue: Absolute 6 |
Absolute 6
Hyacinth --
Labdanum
Hyacinth Absolute was at one time extracted from the flowers of Hyacinthus
orientalis, which originated in Asia Minor and the Balkans but were grown in Holland for extraction. To the best of my knowledge there is no
genuine
Hyacinth Absolute offered today. Generally what is offered as the real absolute is a very skillfully bouqueted absolute created from synthetic and
natural aromatic isolates. The perfume houses offering these types of absolutes do a head-space analysis of the living flower and from this they come
to know the components of the aroma. They then reconstruct the aroma more or less skillfully. A very high quality Hyacinth absolute, "so-called," can
also sell for thousands of dollars per kilo. More...

Sugandhi
A Floral Chypre
I hope that the two previous newsletters on Chypre have proved useful to those of you who
are interested in
venturing into the realm of natural perfumery.
We are going to conclude this series by doing an investigation of the different types of Chypre, the essences used in them, types of dilutents for
perfumes, etc.
It will conclude with a simple recipe for a floral Chypre which I call Sugandhi (which means "beautiful fragrance" in Hindi) Chypre and a coniferous
Chypre which I call Madhuban (which means "fragrant forest" in Hindi).
