We are now embarking on a new series of newsletters dealing with the subject of absolutes and  their contributions to natural perfumery. In this series you will find simple monographs on known and lesser known absolutes, their physical and olfactory characteristics, their use in natural perfumery and the materials they combine well with.

Steffen Arctander's classic work, Perfume and Flavor Materials of Natural Origin, has continued to serve as a basic reference work for such endeavors but I have tried my best to add my own observations according to my own olfactory explorations of the delightful aromatic palette available to us today.  More...

Solstice Pomander Perfume

The perfume theme for the is month of December is Pomander. The subject of pomanders and their perfumes more vast than I imagined when I began this newsletter. Many of you may have made the classic orange-studded-with-cloves holiday pomander at different times of your lives.

 

My mom and I used to make them for the winter holiday fairs in Nevada City where we would sell them along with botanical wreaths that we created from wild harvested botanicals that grew in the mountains around us, as well as from many organically grown dried flowers we cultivated on our land near Camptonville located by the north fork of the Yuba River. The traditional aromatic holiday orange covered with cloves  is but a later day version of the pomanders of the Renaissance and Medieval Times. More...



 

December Updates


Kind greetings! The month of December is upon us bringing its own unique seasonal qualities depending on where we might live. Here in the Pacific Northwest we are enjoying the cool crisp days of deep Autumn. It is a splendid time to be out walking, enjoying the grand beauty of the conifers whose spartan elegance lies concealed behind the deciduous maples, cottonwoods and alders that grace the landscape at other times of the year. 


In recent days we have received new consignments of attars, ruhs and choyas. Many of you special ordered some of them and this week they will be on their way to you. For those who didn't preorder at the special prices you will find the regular prices posted on the internet. More...
